Hubcap Heaven...(mini tutorial)

 Google Hubcap Flower Images...
You can see what got me so excited this past week.
(Pinterest is a great place to check them out too!)
It all started out here at Pull and Pay!
I must say, it was a first for me.
Not sure I'm all that thrilled, over scrounging thru old yucky wrecked cars.
My fear was finding rats or snakes crawling out of them.
My youngest who had never been any place like this either, was more worried about finding dead bodies in the cars!
LOL!!
When you go in and ask where you can find hubcaps, the guy asks for what model car. I said, all different ones and he looked at me like I was an idiot! Once I explained what I was doing, he just rolled his eyes at me!
I'm sure he thought...here's another stupid woman.
:-)
It was an experience. I was filthy from head to toe when it was done, but I had managed to find all the hubcaps I needed for $2.99 a piece.

We pressure washed and spray painted them.

Pretty cool looking now!
I used a couple of different Rust-Oleum paints, and both seemed to work well.
Next I set out to make flowers in the centers of each of the hubcaps.
I'm no artist, but even I managed to get something that didn't look too bad. :-)  I roughly painted a flower. (Rough being the key word) LOL!
Then found that by adding dots, I could cover up a world of sins, in my painting. Adding a dot where each petal meets, then filling in between.
Use the handle end of a small round paintbrush from the craft stores.
They make perfect dots! You will want to dip it into the paint for every couple of dots to get nice results.

The variety of different hubcaps makes for a great garden!

I'm really partial to this style of hubcap.
I've got no idea what it came off of, but it sure is cool looking!
It makes me happy, seeing whole bloomin' bunch!

I started out using an Acrylic paint, but they were too flat looking and I wasn't really sure how they would hold up in the weather.
Then I found these paints at Wal-Mart.
They are made for painting on glass...
I'm hoping that they hold up out doors.
It sounds to me like they should...
time will tell.
I've bought re-bar for the stems and hubby is going to cut out a bunch of metal leaves as soon as I make a pattern for them.
Where is all this going you ask???
On my faux "outhouse"
The toilet planters are in full bloom and soon the sides of this little building will be blooming too!
:-)
I've done a little recycling along the way.
This is my sister -in-laws bike from when she was a kid.
Heck, it's almost an antique now!
LOL!!
The past couple of days, I've been working on a couple of little fences for the sides of the out house.
I'm hoping that in a week or so, I'll have this project done!
;-)
I know it's been a long winded post...
but I've got to share what's happening in my "hood"
I kept hearing all this racket!
And found that in both of my pine trees, we had new families move in!
The guys on the bottom's eyes are not even open here.
Too cute huh!

Til next time...
Keep on Stitchin'
(cause I haven't for a week now)
tee hee hee

  1. I LOVE the flowers. I keep trying to get my husband to stop when there is a hubcap on the roadside so I can do some for my garden. I think they are so cute.

Aww....look at those babies. They will grow quickly.

  2. What a great idea. Your outhouse will be so pretty. How will you attach the rebar to the hubcap?

  6. You are insane! My favorite kind of insane though, dear girl. This is just a hoot and I can't wait to see the final outcome to all of this insanity.

  7. Love it. The hubcaps certainly transformed beautifully. Do you have any plans to hang a couple on the side of the "outhouse"?

How wonderful to have the birds nest in your trees. We have owls and it is a lot of fun to be gardening with three baby owls as an audience. I've even gardened with three baby raccoons as an audience. I guess they come in threes at our place.

  11. Wow. They look amazing. They are going to be such a fun decoration. I started off thinking these were going to be part of the wedding decorations, too. Don't know why the guy at the scrap yard wasn't jumping up and down with excitement. A sale is a sale!! Keep having fun.
