I'm always ready to jump on board and bust thru some of my stash.
I think the reality that I have more stash than years to live,
has started to settle in...Well, that and the fact that I just acquired 5 boxes
of fabric from a gentleman who's wife passed away.
It's always a treasure trove when you go thru someone else's stash.
I found this 60" wide piece of sweatshirt material...
Fleece is a great backing on quilts, so why not try this?
Back in 2016, Pat Sloan had a pattern for a bumble bee pouch
that you can find it
A plan was hatched and I was off and running!
My favorite way of designing is to make it up on the fly...
ummm that would be "bee" in this case!
LOL!!!!
I made up enough blocks to fit the size backing I had.
Then played around with layout ideas.
A little backwards, I know.
I keep saying I'm going to learn to use that EQ program I had to have...
but even I know it's not going to happen anytime soon!

UPDATE...I've had a few of you ask about using sweatshirt material for the backing.
It worked great on the long arm, and I didn't use any batting, so it
makes for a nice lightweight "summer" quilt! This was a happy experiment,
and I will be looking at this for future backings!

It was not without one of those "oh crap" moments.
Sadly, they happen all more frequently than I prefer to admit here.
LOL!!
Now, if you've made star blocks before,
you know there are lots of leftover half square triangles.
Being on that waste not, want not crazy...
I started stitching and trimming the extras.
This bundle of joy measures 28" x 37".
Or would that be "bumble" of joy?
LOL!
We've been busy in the oasis.
This sweet new addition is Buster!
If you look closely, he is peeing in a bucket!
LOL!!!!!
My family had him made for me for Christmas.
For those of you who have followed me for awhile,
you know my sense of humor tends to run off the rails, from time to time.
This is another one of those time.

Joan, you have done it again! You always amaze me with your creativity and projects ... and your wonderful sense of humor ... lol! Your star quilt is bee-utiful! I really love the Bumble of Joy quilt made with the cut-off HSTs. I have also come to the reality that I have more fabric than I will ever have time to sew ... maybe I should pack it all off to you ... if anyone has a chance to get 'er done, it is you, my friend ... :-) Pat!

I love them both! You definitely don't sit idly around when it comes to your "oasis." Your humor is what makes me love to visit and you never cease to amaze me with your quilting and your humor. ReplyDeleteI really love both of your quilts. I want to know what you think of the sweatshirt backing now that it is all done? Do you prewash any of your fabrics. Wondering how tshirt fabric would be? I have quite a bit of both leftover from sewing for kids.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilts. How small are those HSTs in the smaller quilt? I agree, waste not want not and nothing better than getting someone's free stash. I hope it plays well with what you already have. I showed my husband, Tu-Na Helper, your toilet flower planters. He thought they were clever and would make a good conversation piece.

ReplyDeleteI so agree that fleece makes a great backing. Not only does it help to keep you comfortable, but it also stays in place, so you don't have that sliding off the bed or body factor. :)
