I became intrigued with this ruler...and tried it out
in the "New Technique Challenge" with the "Island Batik" ambassadors.
I immediately fell in love with it.
Especially the great packaging it comes in.
What a wonderful way to keep things together.
After looking online at the other creations you can make with these rulers...
One in particular jumped out at me.
I knew it would be perfect for my hand dyed fabrics,
that I've been hoarding long enough.
LOL!
Is this just the coolest?
The sun came out finally and I could get outside,
for some wonderful shots of how the colors play, in this beauty.
This is un-be-weave-a-ble
Yes, it's spelled right! In fact right on the package it says it's an
adj. ...it's no joke
:-)
I used the 6.5" ruler, so my quilt came out to 84"x96".
The pattern can also be made with a 7.5" ruler,
and the instructions are in the pattern for both sizes.
Confession time... I've stayed away from things like this.
I am not much of a fan of wasting fabric.
Not that I don't have enough in my stash to last me 3 lifetimes...
It's the principle of it all.
Twisting and turning and chopping off parts of a block...I just don't know!
But what really made me appreciate these rulers, (especially the larger ones)
is the fact that you can create other quilts with what's leftover.
They refer to them as X-tra's.
Directions for them, are included in the pattern too.
Now your talking!!!

This guy was made with 1/2 of the leftover pieces,
combined with some batiks, I had in my stash.
It measures 50.5" x 62.5"
You can see how the block is created with the leftovers.
It kind of reminds me of a camera for some reason!

This little guy used the other half of the leftover's, and measures 38"x48".
The only extra fabric in it, is a sashing around the outside edges.
The little extra pieces we cut off, go different directions.
Sort them out and, and you've got enough for both little quilts.
And that makes a world of difference to me!
Pretty darn amazing now, isn't it?

ReplyDeleteI adore how you brought the design out into the first two borders in your first quilt. Wow! That sure added an element of delight for me. I agree that I have enough fabric for several lifetimes and yet I hate to throw away fabric. Maybe it comes from having grown up in poverty even though I didn't know it because everyone around us did, too. We certainly didn't go hungry or unclothed. My mother made all of our clothes and we grew our own food, including the meat. I save all my small scraps just in case I want them for applique. Thanks for a wonderful treat with the intro to a new ruler. Maybe this old "dog" could learn a new trick.

ReplyDeleteWowweee! You really had fun with these rulers! I love the variety of patterns you've come up with and all the color is really eye candy! How could anyone pick a favorite? I've got a small size x-block template in my closet that I need to dig out soon.

ReplyDeleteI am impressed by the quilts that you made. I feel the same as you regarding fabric throw aways. I feel as if I was throwing away money even though I should get rid of the scraps. What size would be your choice if you could only have one X block template?

I agree with you that I hate wasting fabrics so the designers have hit on a winner with this one by making designs to use the cut off pieces.

ReplyDeleteOMGosh, once again a beauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutfiul project with amazing X-tras. :) I to always have apprehensions about cutting a block or pieces off all my hard work. I actually once tested a pattern, where I refused to cut part of the layout out because their was no use for the extras you were cutting off. I thought it was short-sighted of the designer to have people cut off part of a project with no intended use of the parts you were cutting off, so for me I added something else to the project to just finish it off. My project just finished differently from how the designer originally planned for the quilt to look and while I know it was wrong of me to refuse to do it since I was testing a project in the first place I just couldn't bear to waste that part of the project. It was in fact the very last pattern I ever tested. I love how these patterns include ideas for the "X-tras" also.

ReplyDeleteWaste not! I have yet to use my X-block ruler. I don't want to waste time NOT using any longer!! The fact that it creates very little waste was the tipping point for me to purchase it a few years ago! Your Lovely quilts are gorgeous examples!
